The neon god - marcel Thijs @Thijs productions
'Music' was the theme of an annual art-event in the town where I live. Schools participate in this event with a paintingcontest. So I took the lyrics from the song The sound of Silence (Disturbed-version) and gave every pupil in my class one sentence as inspiration and started the proces of sketching, experimenting and painting. Finaly I made a videoclip of the Sound of Silence where the paintings of the children popped up when their lyric was sung.
There was one problem: there were more sentences then children, so I took "And the people bowed and prayed, to the Neon God they made" and joined the children in their creative proces.
After the contest I let my painting rest, but I always wanted to make another version.
By the way: my class won the contest.

"Rock for a light" was the first record I bought from Bad Brains. Regea and punk on one album?  I liked the contradiction in their music and wanted to do something with the name of the band.

Superfly Crazy Brain Explosions Marcel Thijs @Thijsproductions

During the nineties I listened to a lot of funk. I also liked  70-ties design (vintage) during thijs decade, especially in movie-posters. Superfly from Curtis Mayfield had it both: a cool logo and cool wah-wah music.

During the nineties I played in a band and bought my own wah-wah-pedal after listening to a lot of Jimi Hendrix. For this work I found inspiration in Voodoo Child (Slight Return), my favourite Hendrix-song.

Beetle Crazy Brain Explosions Marcel Thijs @Thijsproductions

When I bought my first car, it was the iconic Volkswagen Beetle. I wanted to make a drawing of it and started to combine a bug and the car.

The original versions were inked and sprayed with paint to colour. For the new digital versions you see here, I did the whole proces of inking and colouring digitally all over again.

Wheeee Crazy Brain Explosions Marcel Thijs @Thijsproductions

Somewhere in the 80-ties, in a smal coffeeshop in Amsterdam I had a revelation. A poster of a comicpage was hanging on the wall and in the first frame I saw a hippie guy, leaning with his elbows on a table, holding his head in his hands. Six frames later his head was completely melted on the table. Which great artist had such crazy brain explosions, I wandered? From that moment on I wanted to draw and became a lifetime admirer of the weird and crazy underground comics and artists like Robert Crumb and Richard Corben. Under the name Crazy Brain Explosions I started to make work strongly influenced by undergroundcomics.

This work was my first attemp to immitate this craziness.
